Environmental Statement

Sundrella Casual Furniture understands the importance of sustainable manufacturing and eco-friendly products. Long before it was vogue to manufacture with the environment as part of the equation, Sundrella was exploring ways to create high quality, long lasting products, while minimizing our impact on the planet.

By Design:

  • Sundrella manufactures furniture which is designed to be long-lasting and easy to maintain, leading to much less frequent replacement.
  • Because Sundrella products are of such high quality, many customers are able to refurbish their furniture and extend the usable life by many years.

By Our Employees:

  • Sundrella subsidizes van pools to transport our employees to and from work. With approximately one third of our workforce participating in our van pool program, thousands of automobile trips are reduced each year.
  • Sundrella also schedules our manufacturing shifts to begin early each day in order to eliminate the time our employees would spend in rush hour traffic and to use the majority of the energy needed to produce our products during off-peak times.  Those employees that must drive to work are encouraged to form car pools to reduce the number of cars driven to the facility.

During Manufacturing:

  • Our frames are 100% aluminum. We capture and recycle our excess aluminum, whether it can be used in our own manufacturing or by working with area aluminum recyclers.  Additionally, other plastic waste products are recycled through a plastics recycling company.
  • By the nature of powder coating, not all powder attaches to a frame and cannot be ultimately baked into the finish. In order to reduce waste, excess powder is captured during the coating process by means of air filtration, and subsequently reused. This reduces waste and energy usage, while allowing Sundrella to maintain the highest possible finishing standards in the industry.
  • Those powders that cannot be reclaimed are baked into a solid waste thus eliminating possible air contamination when disposal takes place.
  • Lean manufacturing steps ensure Sundrella groups orders by color to maximize the number of pieces in each powder coating run. By reducing color changes, Sundrella minimizes the time where the bake oven is running without furniture passing through it.
  • Excess vinyl strap is collected and sent to vinyl recyclers. Lean manufacturing also assures that straps are not cut until needed; thereby reducing the chance that vinyl will be wasted.
  • Emissions from our plant are carefully tracked to ensure we do not exceed city, county, or state emission standards.  All emission sources are properly permitted and maintained to ensure permit limitations are met.
  • Almost all of the packaging used to protect and ship products and raw materials are recycled or recyclable. From the corrugated wrap used on the frames to protect the finish, to the cardboard cartons used in shipping, vendors and materials are chosen based on their quality as well as impact on the environment.  To the maximum extent possible, wood pallets are reused in the shipment and storage of products and raw materials, thus cutting down on the harvesting of trees from our nation’s forests.  Many usable pallets which cannot be reused by the company are recycled through pallet recyclers, thus helping to eliminate pallets being sent to area landfills.
  • Spent hydraulic oils are captured and recycled through legal oil recycling centers.
  • Our factory was designed to incorporate large numbers of sky lights to maximize natural lighting and decrease the need for artificial light. Anywhere supplemental lighting is needed, high intensity mercury vapor bulbs are used for plant lighting thus cutting down on the number of fluorescent lighting fixtures needed to light the manufacturing area.
  • There are virtually no solvents used in the manufacturing processes of the plant.  Water soluble coolants are used in machining processes, low VOC chemicals are utilized in only a few areas of the manufacturing plant, and some latex paints are used rather than solvent-based paints and primers.
  • The main manufacturing work areas are cooled utilizing evaporative water coolers thus eliminating the need for higher energy consuming industrial air conditioning units.  Cooling units are shut off when personnel go home for the day and air conditioning thermostat controls are set back when the offices are closed.

By Our Customers:

  • The ability to simply wash furniture with water or a mild detergent solution allows our customers to keep their furniture looking good while using ecologically friendly cleaning products.
